Classic DC Art Museum Wedding

Fact: classic weddings will always and forever be my favorite. No buts about it. And when you’re marrying with the most timeless of days, what better spot to be but our nation’s capitol? Or the National Museum of Women In the Arts, to be specific. It’s the unbelievable setting of this black, white and gold affair and thanks to Vicki Grafton the party is just getting started. More right here!

From The Bride…Our story began, ironically, when Alfred’s friend approached me at a networking mixer. After learning that I went to undergrad in the city that Alfred was in town visiting from, his friend thought to introduce us. There was in instant connection between myself and Alfred and what followed was several years of long distance dating —I lived in Washington, DC and Alfred lived in North Carolina.

After weathering the storm of dating long distance, we really wanted our wedding to be special…to be the ultimate celebration of our love. We decided to keep our wedding party small so that we could focus on what was really important, becoming husband and wife!! I wasn’t the type of bride who had fantasized about what her wedding would be like so when it came time to plan all I knew was that I wanted the day to feel like us. I wanted a day that was beautiful and glamorous but still elegant and timeless. I didn’t have a theme for our wedding but I focused on a black/ivory/gold color palette because it embodied the understated beauty I envisioned for our day.

One of my favorite planning elements was our beautiful engraved wedding invitations. I put so much time into designing them and when it was finally time to mail them I was overwhelmed with all the other wedding planning. Alfred stepped in and helped me with everything from making envelope liners to picking out vintage stamps. It was quite the undertaking!! It was probably the only wedding task that we spent a large amount of time working on together and it transformed what could have been a tireless task into a treasured memory. Planning our ceremony was another special time in the planning process. I wanted to ensure every word spoken during the ceremony reflected the special bond that we share, so I wrote the entire ceremony which was officiated by my best friend from childhood. I labored over so many wedding decisions but this was one I never doubted for a minute. Surrounded by our family and friends, having my friend unite us in marriage, it was truly a magical experience.

After all the planning, the day really did go by in flash, I’m thankful for my family and friends that played a part and my wonderful vendors that helped bring my vision to life. Our wedding was a beautiful day, sometimes I close my eyes and mentally transport back to that day knowing the best part is that was just the beginning.

From Apryl Ann PhotographyMegan and Reese’s wedding as one of the happiest affairs! They chose to have their ceremony and reception indoors however we snuck off outside to grab some gorgeous natural portraits. Her reception was filled with neutral colors with gold succulents!

From The Bride…Reese and I were engaged while walking our pups in one of my favorite downtown Dallas parks. Coincidently that same evening my sweet little niece, and future flower girl, was born. After our engagement Reese surprised me with a party filled our closest friends and family. From an engagement to a new little niece, the night was definitely a time of celebration with the ones we loved the most.

In planning our wedding we knew we wanted that celebration with our friends and family to continue. Being the youngest of three and so the last in my family to get married it seemed making the big decisions was the easiest. I fell in love with our reception venue immediately when I saw the beautiful big windows and downtown views. I knew for the color scheme and flowers I wanted it to be romantic with hints of gold and succulents. I also knew I wanted meaningful touches throughout the ceremony and reception. However I was not quite sure how I wanted it all to come together…

The weather on our big day could not have been more beautiful; we took our pre-ceremony pictures in the park and then headed to the church. Everyone tells you how quickly the day passes and I cannot believe how right they were. I am so grateful we had Apryl Ann to capture all our special moments. One of my favorites was walking down the aisle with my dad and a bouquet adorned with my grandmother’s rosary. After our nuptials the party kicked off with Reese and I entering the venue with an awesome horn entrance.

Afterward, a newly married bridesmaid, told me to take a minute to “take it all in” and it was a wonderful piece of advice. GRO designs took everything I wanted and made it come to life. My very favorite was the succulent centerpieces dusted with gold. Another very special detail was our favor table filled with my late grandmother’s Czech wedding cookies all baked by Reese’s family. In a nod to our new hometown of San Antonio, CN catering did a delicious taco bar with margaritas. Finally in honor of where we met our groom’s cake was decorated with a big Double T for Texas Tech. Reese kicked off the dance floor with a solo dance to “respect”, then everyone joined in and Walton Stout Band kept the party going from there! They were so much fun! We handed out sunglasses and glow sticks as dance floor favors and kept the celebration going until the final song. I am so grateful to everyone who helped in making it the day of our dreams!

From Seen Photography and Westcott WeddingsSometimes you just need a colorful door! When we first started collaborating on our styled shoot together and were dreaming up the possibilities, we wanted to create inspiration for our brides that was fresh, vibrant and unusual. We were inspired by the idea of an upscale desert wedding, and we wanted to blur the lines between glam/casual and modern/traditional. What we ended up with was a unique, yet attainable look that combines mid-century modern and vintage touches along with a desert chic aesthetic, ideal for the bride that wants a little extra color and eclectic design for her wedding.

Le San Michele in Buda provided an AMAZING backdrop for the day of…the stucco house with the blue door and the fields of cactus and agave reflected the theme perfectly. Most of the furniture and decor we selected from Mockingbird Domestics, a shop in Austin, TX that sources from local artisans. From the fabulous “hairy chair” to the buttery-smooth wooden mid-century bench and side table, every piece really helped set the tone for the shoot. We also used Mockingbird Domestics to select the vintage, gold-rimmed plates to display on terra cotta chargers, fringed tea towels to use as napkins and those incredible handcrafted arrows to add a pop of color at each place setting.

The oh-so-talented Erin at Rosehip Flora designed a lush collection of vibrant blooms seen everywhere from the delicate floral crown to that unbelievable bouquet. She also collaborated with Michael Merritt Studios, who let us borrow all of his beautiful clay vessels that added another special visual layer to our shoot. Samantha at Wondrous Whimsy designed and created all of the gorgeous paper goods for the shoot, including our “terracotta” menu (which she actually made from clay, and was one of our favorite touches!). Jackie with Sweet Treets Bakery created a simple, yet whimsical cake that paired perfectly with the color-blocked acrylic backdrop, ideal for any al fresco occasion. The black lace dress was a last minute decision that we are so thrilled we made, it really helped all the bright colors of our shoot “pop” even more and looked amazing on Molly, our model. We really love the way brides are branching out beyond lighter dress colors for their big day, and it also helped elevate the overall elegance and unique look of the shoot. We had an incredible time planning the entire look to fruition, and hope we can provide some great inspiration to brides looking for something chic and unusual for their upcoming event!
